Beat Your Mesothelioma with Exercise

Beat Your Mesothelioma with Exercise for Healthy Lung Month
In observance of healthy lung month, you should try getting plenty of exercise to fight back against mesothelioma. All over the world, people are learning more about ways to keep their lungs healthy, and you should be made aware of the benefits of exercise if you're suffering from mesothelioma cancer.

Is Physical Activity Helpful in Fighting Cancer?

In the past, medical professionals treated people who had cancer like invalids who couldn't be trusted to eat, sleep, or walk around by themselves. However, the idea that bedrest is the best way to beat cancer is seriously outdated, and all of the
latest research indicates that exercise can help the body muster its resources and combat cancer in a highly effective way. It's been found that physical activity helps cancer patients sleep better, have more energy, increase their muscle mass, and reduce cancer-related stresses on their bodies.

Exercise also mitigates the effects of chemotherapy-related peripheral neuropathy, which is a terrible condition that can occur as a consequence of anti-cancer drugs. Most importantly, exercise improves a cancer patients' general mood and outlook on life, and a body that is mobilized with positivity is much more likely to make a full recovery. Even the American Cancer Society has confirmed scientific findings that show the importance of staying active if you have cancer, which just goes to show that exercising when you have cancer is becoming more and more mainstream.

What Are the Best Exercises for Mesothelioma Patients?

Since mesothelioma affects the lungs, people with this rare type of cancer may have trouble exercising in the ways that they used to enjoy. However, this doesn't mean that mesothelioma patients are condemned to staying in their rooms all day without access to fresh air or physical activity. In fact, there are plenty of exercises that people with mesothelioma can do that don't require strenuous breathing or other highly demanding movements or actions. Here are a few examples of life-affirming exercises that mesothelioma patients can do that will enliven their bodies and clear their minds:

1. Walking

While you might feel that running or jogging is the best way to get exercise, these activities are highly strenuous, and mesothelioma patients might have trouble drawing enough breath to keep up with the pace of their legs. However, your mesothelioma can't stop you from taking a meandering walk around the lake or down your favorite nature trail. Even if it's just around the block, going out for a quick walk will get your heart rate going and enhance muscle tone.

2. Strength Training

Stepping on an elliptical or running on a treadmill might be too difficult for people with mesothelioma, but lifting weights is a great alternative to these activities. Since chemotherapy and radiation therapy can negatively impact your bone density, strength training is also a great way to shore up your bone health.

3. Stretching

Whether you opt for yoga or simple calisthenics, doing stretching exercises can help your body feel better and make your muscles stronger.
